This is a very rare plate from Imperial yacht “Queen Victoria” by Imperial Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg made during the reign of Alexander II (1855-1881) and bearing his mark in light green. Free of any kind of damages.
An Imperial yacht “Queen Victoria” was built for Nicholas I (1825-1855) in England in 1846. Since the death of Nicholas I in 1855 Alexander II ride by this yacht alone.
The yacht was out of service by 1884.
Palace services were made in quantities of thousands and plates took the biggest number in production hence every person needs a plate, one tea pot could be used by a few persons, one soup tureen is for 6-12 persons, fruit dish for 4-8 persons, etc..., but plate is for everyone and there were dinners with 2000-3000 guests and the biggest coronation service for Nicholas II had 40,000 pieces.
Yachts were very small compare to palaces and only officers used the porcelain on yachts, so there just a few hundreds pieces were produced.
There were only 8 Imperial yachts with their own porcelain services and “Queen Victoria” was the first one of them when 33 palaces were in use by Russian tsars not counting numerous services as everyday service, banquet services and private smaller services for every one palace. This is why we see Imperial yacht services items so rare on sale.
