russian *17th century* icon TRANSFIGURATION

The icon “TRANSFIGURATION” was painted in the beg. of 17th century. Later, around 1830, was inserted in another panel. The traces of incretion are visible by the all 4 edges of kovcheg (recess). On the right, by the border, you can see (last pic.) traces of later painting (intentionally left by cleaner), that covered the 17th century painting entirely and recently was professionally cleaned to reveal the old original painting. It happened that the old original painting was covered, sometimes, by several layers of later painting. It happened because the linseed oil that protected the painting became unclear in 70-100 years by accumulating all the fall outs. Easy to imagine, in 17th, even 18th century many RUSSIAN village houses in Winter, Fall and Spring used stoves for heating, but didn’t have chimneys, all smoke went out by a window, that was cut right on the ceiling level, higher than usual windows. 80 years old icon became totally unclear and the owners, either dispose the icon, or brought it to the monk to paint anew. Such icon when professionally cleaned can revile an original painting in excellent condition, because it was well preserved by later layers of painting. This is the case you can see here.
