This Russian extremely high quality gold and diamond cigarette case made in Russia 1896-1908. The Coat of Arms of the Russian Prince Michael Evlanoff on the reverse of the lid. The case was given as a token of gratitude to his friend who helped him in writing a book about Alfred Noble, see the visit card of the Prince. The Prince was a second and last husband of Elisabeth Arden a businesswoman who built a cosmetics empire in the United States.
Prince Michael Evlanoff Russian emigre who brought little but glamour to her second marriage, and that soon wore thin; they were divorced in 1944, and Arden never married again.
Elizabeth Arden (ca.1878-1966) was born Florence Nightingale Graham in 1878 in Woodbridge, Ontario. Her father, William Graham, was Scottish and her mother, Susan (Pierce) Tadd, was English. She was the fourth of five children. The couple immigrated to Canada, where they worked a farm near Toronto. Arden was married twice, to banker Thomas Jenkins Lewis in 1915 (divorced 1934) and to Prince Michael Evlanoff in 1942 (divorced 1944). Subsequently, she lived with her brother’s daughter, Patricia Young.
